Trendy or timeless: will any of these trends stand the test of time?

Social media apps like TikTok and Instagram have maintained a large influence on teen trends; ideas can go viral in seconds on these fast paced platforms. Not only that, but celebrities and influencers also have a strong pull on what the majority thinks is stylish, tasty, fun or creative. Right now, these powers can be seen popularizing recipes, haircuts and older fashion trends.

Entertainment

The horror-drama television series “Squid Game” recently took the world by storm, topping the Netflix charts. The show featured a Korean treat made with baking soda and melted sugar called dalgona, a hard, toffee-like candy with a honeycomb taste. In the show, contestants were tasked with carving shapes out of the dalgona candy using only a sewing needle without cracking it. Since its release, there has been a surge of people documenting and posting their attempts at making the candy and trying the challenge out for themselves on social media.

Hair

Along with many other quarantine hairstyles, the wolf-cut has gained acclaim. This trend was most present on social media where TikTokers were filming themselves cutting their own hair. To achieve this cut, people were flipping their hair into a ponytail at the crown of their head and bluntly chopping off the end of the pony tail. Because the wolf-cut is a mullet with choppy layers, the more imperfect it is, the more authentic it looks. The wolf-cut was especially appealing because it was easy to pull off at home with little to no assistance. Samo student Tatum Meyer (’23) was one of the many teens who joined in on this trend.

“I saw a lot of people on TikTok with the wolf cut and remembered Joan Jett’s hairstyle,” Meyer said.

Accessories

Lately, many young celebrities have been sporting retro-style wired earbuds. Zoe Kravitz, Lily Rose Depp, and Bella Hadid have been spotted using wired headphones as an accessory for their outfits. TikTok has further popularized this look, especially among high school students. One TikTok influencer named @thedigifairy explained in a viral video that this trend is appealing because it makes celebrities seem more attainable or down to earth. The trend gives off the impression of effortlessness because of the simplicity of the wired earbuds.

Activities

Similar to the retro style earbuds, film photography has also made a resurgence. Many young people enjoy romanticizing past generations and film photography might be repopularized as a result of this. Samo photography student Millie Weill (’22) explained why older styles of photography are coming back.

“Film photos are often seen as grunge and the grain allows for a unique aesthetic,” Weill said.

Looking around, it is obvious just how influential social media is when it comes to the patterns across campus. While the entire nature of trends is that they come and go, the recycling of old ones will stay timeless.

Scarlett Tropea-Lester (’23) and Tatum Meyer (’23) decided to cut their hair into the trending wolf-cut style after noticing its popularity on social media.
