Boys’ baseball bounces back

Samo baseball’s season started with an away game on Feb. 12, and they have had some drastic ups and downs so far. Yet, with five games under their belts, Samo is 3-2, meaning they have won three games and lost two, emerging victorious from their first five games.
Samo had a tough 2020-2021 season, but this year is looking up. New pitchers Adam Harris (’22) and Colin Jones (’23) are not letting their opponents get any hits in.
Coach Jordan Sigman speaks on the different positions on the team that have been working well this semester.
“Pitching and defense have really carried the team in the early going and it was nice to see the offense gain momentum on Saturday at Campbell Hall,” Sigman said.
Defense is the team’s strong suit, but their hitting has not been slacking either. Christian Recendez (’23) and Bobby Mercado (’22) stand out specifically in this area, hitting hot over the last two games.
Now that the wins are stacking up, morale is high and cheers ring out from the dugout. Masks might make running a little harder than usual, but it is not stopping Samo from playing their hardest. It is at least more relaxed than last year.
Thomas Digeatano (’23) reflects on last year’s training, when the team only got to play occasionally.
“Last year kinda stunk because we only played on Saturdays, but this year’s an A-plus year,” Digeatano said.
Even if their only home game was a loss, Sigman and the varsity team are looking forward to their tournament at El Segundo this weekend and their first evening home game on March 1.
First Baseman Joe Arriaga (’23) hopes to keep up the team’s spirits throughout the season.
“Just keeping our morale up would be perfect,” Arriaga said.
