Ilene Straus appointed to state Board of Education

Eloise GrahamStaff WriterLess than one week after being appointed to the state Board of Education, Bill Honig has refused the nomination. Governor Jerry Brown swiftly replaced Honig with former Samo principal and Beverly Hills Unified School District Assistant Superintendent of Education Services, Ilene Straus.Honig resigned due to "complications" with his wife's non-profit organization. Straus was appointed on Jan. 10 and was sworn in on Jan. 19.“I’m [going to be working] on statewide instructional issues, curriculum and policy. We get to work on improving our public schools. It’s been my life’s work and now I get to help on a statewide level,” Straus said to emathematic.com.Incoming superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District, John Deasy, worked closely with Straus to implement the House system at Samo.
