Boys’ basketball moves on from successful off-season
Elizabeth MebaneStaff WriterVarsity boys’ basketball kicked off its season on Tuesday, Nov. 20 with an away scrimmage at Loyola High School. The boys continued their preseason games with the Torrance South Bay Classic Tournament from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1 and the Santa Monica Tournament from Dec. 3 to Dec. 8.Loyola and Samo are considered two of the best basketball teams in Divisions 1AA and 1A. In the first game against Loyola, coach James Hecht felt the team’s play was solid.“We feel very good about our team,” Hecht said. “In the Loyola game, we were down seven at the half and then we went up by 12 in the third quarter. I think we’re off to a good start and we’re playing some pretty good basketball.”Samo played its guard Jonah Mathews (’16), younger brother to guard and captain Jordan Mathews (’13). Jordan Mathews, who already committed to the University of California at Berkeley, played a major role on the team, putting up 29 points in the first Loyola game. The following weekend, the boys placed fourth in the Santa Monica Tournament from Dec. 3 to Dec. 8 after playing Oaks Christian, Crenshaw, Loyola and Chaminade High Schools.According to captain Trevis Jackson (’13), the result of the Santa Monica Tournament was not what the team had hoped for.“We wanted to do a lot better, especially coming off a tournament where we made it to the championship,” Jackson said. “We definitely had high intentions for this tournament.”Jordan Mathews agrees with Jackson in that though the team should have seen different results, they can still improve.“Overall, we need to get better defensively, but we learned a lot and it’s early, so we have time to grow,” Jordan Mathews said. The Vikings played another game against Loyola in the Samo tournament that ended with a very close score of 82-83; Samo lost in overtime.“The boys followed the game plan and it was a hard fought battle by both teams,” Hecht said. “Unfortunately, Loyola made some game-winning plays at the end. It’s a game of momentum changes and we had opportunities. Unfortunately, we came up one point short.”After these two tournaments, Hecht aims to shift the focus to the future.“We expected to dominate and win every game, but we came close in our two losses,” Hecht said. “Now is the time to reflect back on what went well and what didn’t. I have no doubt we will come to practice ready to work and ready to improve upon the areas of concern.”Based on how the Vikings played in these two tournaments, Jordan Mathews is encouraged by his team for success in Ocean League.“I think we have a good chance to win Ocean League,” Jordan Mathews said. “If anything will compel us to win, it’s these losses, because losses hurt.”Because 12 out of the 16 players are seniors, the team is now senior-dominated, and thus more experienced.“It helps to have so many seniors because we have guys that have been in every type of situation,” Jordan Mathews said. “Whether the scores are up 20 or down 10, our seniors are ready for anything.”Underclassmen Ray Mancini (’14), Dominique Duque (’14), Nuwriyl Williams (’15) and Jonah Mathews are also excited for the season.Mancini acknowledges the family-like relationship between the teammates.“It really doesn’t matter the grade to be honest,” Mancini said. “We’re family and we treat each other like brothers. I guess for the seniors, the underclassmen are like little brothers.”Despite being a freshman, Jonah Mathews has changed the status quo by being able to bond with the upperclassmen.“The season has been pretty fun so far and it’s no big deal [playing with the seniors] because they treat me like a little brother,” Jonah Mathews said.Coach Hecht thinks positively toward daily play and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).“Each and every day, we are trying to get a little better at something,” Hecht said. “We want to be playing our best basketball, especially [for CIF] in Feb. Hopefully we’ll be there, and I think we will.”The boys also have high hopes for this season and have the desire to go as far as they can in CIF.“We are more athletic, talented and more of a team this year,” Mancini said. “What are we most looking forward to this season? Two words: the ring.”emebane@thesamohi.com
