Boys' Volleyball sweeps Inglewood in three swift games
Chelsea BrandweinManaging EditorThe North Gym was peppered with fans on Wednesday, March 19 at the boys' volleyball team's first game of the season on their home court. And no surprise, they ousted Inglewood in three quick sets, 25-11, 25-15, 25-12. Although the Vikings got off to a fairly sluggish start, not gaining energy until the end of the second game, they were consistent throughout and kept Inglewood an arm's length away on the score board — in the first game, the Vikings managed to hold the Sentinels at five points for seven plays. An occasional “let's go Samo” was chanted as the referees made mutual gesticulations to each other from opposite sides of the court to settle a play. In the third game, the Vikings came in strong, scoring one, then two then three points which kept Inglewood off the score board until the fourth play. While the boys are proud to have a tally in the win column coming off three losses from Torrance, El Segundo and Culver City respectively, they acknowledge the importance of sustaining their focus even against sure wins like Inglewood. “It's all mental,” Dane Keckin ('13) said. “Everyone just needs to go into practice with a sense of emergency and not just go through the motions. Inglewood is the kind of team that can only score off our errors. So, we gave them all their points.” Noah Garber ('13) concurs. “When we play a team like Inglewood, we usually let our guard down,” Garber said. “But, it was good to have them for our first home game to get the jitters away.” cbrandwein@thesamohi.com
