Girls' soccer loses 3-0 against Mira Costa High School

Samo girls' soccer suffered a 3-0 loss in its first pre-season game against Mira Costa on Dec. 2.The team started out strong in its first official home game of the season and held off Mira Costa, ending the first half with a 0-0 score. Toward the end of the second half, Mira Costa increased the pressure and was able to score off of a long ball overhead."The difference between the first and second half was that [Mira Costa] scored a lucky goal on us and we put our heads down and lost composure from then on," captain Marie Salem ('14) said. "The most difficult part was keeping the energy up and focused every second. We actually played good defense, they just got a couple of lucky goals."Mira Costa went on to score a few minutes later on a header off of a corner kick. The team got its last goal during the last quarter by going down the line and crossing the ball on to the center — a play they attempted many times throughout the match.Nevertheless, Samo picked up its offensive play in the second half and was able to create a few very close scoring opportunities."We played a lot better offensively in the 2nd half, and we had way more scoring opportunities," Janet Colman-Belin ('15) said.  "After the first goal we kind of had a defensive breakdown. I don't think the score reflects how close the game was. In the first half, we played really defensively, but I felt like we had the most momentum of the game at the end of the second half."'friosfetchko@thesamohi.com
