Greenies beat Culver City, 13-3
Boys’ water polo was victorious against its crosstown rival, the Culver City Centaurs, with a score of 13-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 30.Throughout the game, the Greenies’ defense rarely allowed Culver to gain an advantage, and a number of defensive stops only allowed Culver to score one goal in the first half. The Centaurs lost momentum as Samo began the third quarter with three consecutive goals by co-captain Jackson Hauty (’14). Samo continued to increase its lead until the game was over, as 4th quarter goals by Sam Reamer (’14), Aaron Attarzadeh (’15) and Matt Cianfrone (’14) allowed the Vikings to defeat the Centaurs by a decisive margin.According to Cianfrone, Samo was able to take advantage of Culver’s heavy reliance on a select number of players. Unlike Culver, Samo has become increasingly efficient at working as a single unit.“Culver ended up relying too much on its [better] players to finish and pull out a win,” Cianfrone said. After Samo developed a significant lead at the half, Cianfrone believes that the Greenies’ ability to maintain their focus was crucial to the team's victory.“Flanders constantly reminded us that the pool is not a classroom. We can’t fall asleep after [the game] has started,” Cianfrone said.According to Attarzadeh, Samo's recent string of home wins has given the team newfound momentum and has inspired the Greenies to finish the remainder of the season with everything they have.“We beat El Segundo, Beverley and now Culver City, and we’ve gained a lot of confidence," Attarzadeh said." "As [the] team [members] become more and more supportive of each other and there’s less [selfish play] it’s certainly possible we could win the [Ocean League Championships].”
