Samo beats Morningside 3-1

Gregory BoehmStaff WriterBoys' soccer won 3-1 against Morningside High School at a home game on Friday, Jan. 20.The game started off to Morningside’s advantage. In the first minutes of the game Morningside scored with a play that left senior goalkeeper Aziz Yehia split between two Morningside players and no defenders to support him.The score remained at 1-0 until the end of the first half. However, early into the second half of the game a Morningside player made a risky tackle costing his team a penalty kick. Sophomore forward Omar Sanchez stepped up to take his first shot which deflected off of the top goal post. One of the Morningside players rushed into the penalty box before Sanchez had struck the ball, giving Sanchez a second chance. This time Sanchez scored and tied the game 1-1.Morningside made another folly in their own penalty box later in the second half. One of the players made contact with the ball with his arm while trying to gain possession resulting in a handball penalty kick. Sanchez lined up again to take the kick. By fooling the opposing goalkeeper, Sanchez earned Samo another goal.Samo maintained solid defense and offense following the second penalty kick. A cross from senior forward Barack Cassily was sent to senior forward Adam Davison who headed the ball into the net, cementing Samo’s 3-1 lead.
