Brooke WeissStaff WriterSamo obtained a 17-3 victory against the Culver City Centaurs on Oct. 19 at Corsair field. The win put the Vikings at 3-0 in league, tying them with Inglewood High School and leaving them with hopes of receiving the title of league champions. The first quarter ended in a field goal by the Centaurs who decided to back out of a touchdown due to Samo’s quick responsiveness, tackles and strong defense in general. During the second quarter, senior quarterback Ryan Barbarin handed off the ball to senior running back Russell Revis, who drove the ball through the end zone. However, the touchdown did not count due to holding, by halftime it remained 3-0 with Culver City leading.“I was shocked when the touchdown didn't count, I didn't want to let down the team,” Revis said.According to coach Travis Clark, the second half of the game showed a strong performance by Samo’s defense. During the middle of third quarter, Barbarin passed the ball to senior wide receiver Sebastian LaRue, who took it 84 yards down the field. Samo had the first lead of the game at 7-3. At the end of third, Revis got a second chance when he scored a 48-yard touchdown, leaving the score 14-3.“My teammates told me they would block and clear the way for me to score again,” Revis said. “That made me so proud to be a Viking.”The fourth quarter was more about defense for the Vikings. They were getting more interceptions than the first half and working together as a team.“Don’t be lazy; we are almost at the end,” Clark said to the Vikings.Samo had a strong offense and defense throughout the whole game according to Clark. The Vikings ended the game with a field goal; the final score was 17-3; a Viking victory.Clark was more than satisfied with the victory.“What a team effort this was. Our offensive line was on point and everyone stepped it up,” Clark said. “I take my hat off to each and every one of the players. We had some outstanding performances, especially from kicker Denicio Gonzalez-Drake and quarterback Barbarin.”Today’s battle against Inglewood will most likely decide the title of league champions — a title that Samo strives to earn.“Here we come. We have everything it takes to win [league],” Clark said. “We get to control our destiny and we want to give all of the fans a game to be excited about. We want to be the Ocean League champs again.”bweiss@thesamohi.com
