A look at Samo's Halloween celebrations
S-House Fall Festival
The annual S-House Fall Festival, which offered fall-themed activities and food for S-House students, was held on Friday, Oct. 24.
According to S-House Advisory member Brandon Hall-Pascascio (’17), the S-House Advisory board dedicated numerous meetings to planning the event.
"The event was very successful, as it usually is,” said Hall-Pascascio. “In the S-House Advisory, we try our best to make it better every year. We started planning the Fall Festival in the beginning of September; we met every Thursday to make sure this event would turn out amazing."
I-House Spooky Fest
I-House celebrated Halloween by hosting the annual Spooky Fest on Wednesday, Oct. 29 on the second floor of the Technology Building.
Many students in I-House joined in on the festivities by participating in pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, face painting and other activities provided by parent volunteers and the I-House Advisory. I-House Advisory member Claire Rawson-Dannenbaum ('16) noticed the increase in attendance at this event. She said this year’s Spooky Fest attracted more students than other I-House events in the past.
Although the event was highly attended, Brian Matusovsky (’15), another I-House Advisory member, notes that it didn’t reach its financial goal.
"No money was raised,” Matusovsky said. “In fact we may have lost some money, which we fundraised last year in order to get all of the decorations and food, though a majority of it was donated from I-House parents and families.”
Despite this setback, Matusovsky still thought the event served its purpose of house unity.
"I think the event went great. People really enjoyed the food and admired the decorations and we got a lot of participation in all of our activities," Matusovsky said. "I think that [all the activities] sounded very fun, especially cookie decorating. Who doesn’t love free sweets?”
Halloween Costume Contest
The annual Costume Contest, featuring over twenty students donning their Halloween costumes, was held on Friday, Oct. 31 at lunch in front of Barnum Hall.
Many students competed with original costumes, which were judged by both teacher Randy Denis and winners of last year's costume contest, Sarah Johnson ('16) and Batisse Le Tenoux ('16). Student could enter in either the boys, girls or groups category.
Boys costume winner Nathan Garcia ('18) dressed as Hellboy, a movie and comic book character. The winner of the girls category was a student dressed as Navi, a character from Avatar.
According to Le Tenoux, this year’s contest showcased a unique category of costumes.
"Every year we see a different 'trend' of costumes,” Le Tenoux said. “Some years there are a lot of pop culture [and] celebrity references, but this year I noticed a lot more comic book character costumes.”
