ASB Election results

On Wednesday April 19, students across all grades filed into Barnum Hall to cast their ballots for their ASB representatives for next year. By the time the dust had settled, and all the votes had been counted, an impressive and experienced student board had been assembled. Griffin James (’18), a member of The Samohi, was elected ASB President for the 2017-2018 school year along side with Hannah Sabbe (’19) Vice President, Patricia Santos (’18) Secretary, Ryan Chien (’19) Treasurer and Pat Schmeizer (’19) Student Member of the Board.James had this to say with respect to the makeup of the new board.Sabbe was equally enthusiastic. She looks forward to coordinating events in the future.“I want people to know that their ideas are being heard,” Sabbe said. “There is so much potential to have amazing events that include everyone on campus, and I want to be able to make that happen.”Santos, previously an ASB Sports Commissioner, looks forward to further impacting the school at whole.I wanted to make more of an impact for the class with a higher position,” Santos said. “My primary goal for the next school year is to take note of any concerns people have regarding ASB, the student body itself, or our school campus.”Chien hopes to further continue his work as a treasurer for ASB in the upcoming school year. He hopes to incorporate new means of voting for students.“As this year's sophomore treasurer, the class of 2019's bank account always stayed positive and never dipped below zero,” Chien said. “I wanted to aim towards implementing the same success into our school account.”ASB’s newly elected Student Member of the Board, Pat Schmelzer, feels his new position is the most influential one to have.“Of all the positions available to me, I felt that this one was the most impactful,” Schmelzer said. “I tell the board all the things that are happening at Samo and what people want to see happen, [and] it's my job to be as compelling and influential while presenting info.”This new student administration aims to enact real change campus-wide.“Whether it's school voting via social media, website or a potential school app, it's important to incorporate ideas from as many students as we can,” Chien said. “I guarantee you that next year we will implement suggestion boxes in the house offices, and other locations for students to give their own opinions and ideas for Samo.”
