Boys tennis defeats Culver thanks to strong doubles
On April 20, Samo boys tennis defeated Culver City High School 13-5. The win will be key to Samo on their road to the CIF.Most of the games seemed evenly matched. However, Samo was able to step up their game and win the closer games. While in the past singles have been Samo’s strength while doubles were a weakness, against Culver City, the doubles truly stepped it up in order to give the Vikings the edge.“Our singles was solid but the doubles came through and showed a lot of improvement. It was overall a good match,” Kirun Cheung (’18) said.Overall, it was Samo’s preparation and determination which won them the game. Along with Cheung, Christian Bushnell (’18) agrees that a strong performance by the doubles was important.“The key to our win against Culver was that doubles won most of their matches. Singles is never really an issue, we have really strong singles player,” Bushnell said. “Doubles played really well and we can see that in the result.”Now with a record of 3-2 in league, Samo is really hoping they can make it to CIF and compete. But to ensure that, a win against Beverly Hills High School is necessary. For coach Winston Poon, the key to defeating Beverly Hills lies in the doubles.“We played a lot better against Culver than we did earlier in the week,” Poon said. “We will have to do well in doubles if we want to have a chance at beating Beverly.”
