Boys volleyball beats Lawndale in three sets
On Tuesday, April 5, the Samo boys volleyball team beat Lawndale High School in a 3-0 sweep. This win adds to the Vikings undefeated league record of 3-0. The Vikings controlled the first set, winning by a total of 11 points. The Vikings played as unit and had everything working for them. “We executed the things we practiced all week,” said outside hitter Tyler Logan (’16).Surprisingly the second set was a lot closer, with it coming down to the wire.Going into the set, Coach Sato decided to pull a few of the starters to keep them fresh. This threw off the chemistry of the unit, resulting in many self-inflicted wounds. Lawndale was able to give the team a run for their money and continuously keep themselves in a position to win. The Vikings finally pulled away at the end, capturing the narrow 25 to 23 victory.“We were winning the game so we relaxed and we started playing at their pace,” said middle blocker Noah Wright (’16). But we realized we needed to pick our intensity and energy up again to seal the deal.In the final set, Samo displayed their dominance by only allowing nine points. The team got back to what they were doing in the first set and looked unbeatable. They controlled the tempo of the game and were able to set up exactly what they wanted. The team looks to extend their streak with a road match against heated rival Beverly Hills next week.
