Baseball looks to strike out the competition

With the spring season starting up, Samo’s varsity baseball team looks to create a cohesive defense and aggressive offense under the supervision of new head coach Willie Cabrera. The team lost their season opener in a nail-biting 3-4 game to Palisades Charter High School but they are undeterred in their pursuit of excellence. With captains Caleb Downing (’19), Simeon Downing (’19), Hunter Van Cott (’19) and Yoni Zeevi (’19) leading the way, they intend to lock in seamless play on the field and capitalize on their hitting potential. Caleb Downing shared what they want to work on, but overall felt good about the team’s skills.“I feel we can improve on the way we start games. We jump out of the gate slowly with our hitting and allow the other team to stay in the game. But all in all, our pitching, defense and hitting are outstanding,” Caleb Downing said. Cabrera felt strongly in what his team had to offer for the spring season and wants to train them hard to make the team as relentless and confident as they can be.Until the end of their season in mid-May, the team will work at finding the best line-up, working to strengthen any weaknesses and making their game play not just more energetic, but deadly efficient in order to achieve their ultimate goal.  “This season we want to win a CIF championship. We have a really great core of seniors and the whole team has the desire to win. They understand what we need to do to accomplish just that,” Caleb Downing said.  With the whole team on board and the strong passion for baseball demonstrated by the players, their path to CIF is sure to be steady.
