The volleyball court is in session

After over a year in quarantine, the Samo girls’ volleyball team can finally start their season! Last season, during the 2019-2020 school year, the volleyball team made it all the way to CIF, but ended up losing in the first round. Now, the team is working hard to get back in their groove again. Being moved into the Bay League, the Samo girls’ volleyball team is simply trying to get used to playing together again and working toward a win. With a goal to make the top three in the Bay League in order to qualify for CIF, the Samo girls’ volleyball team is working harder than ever.

“We’re all really looking for a win,” player Tania Mahdavi (’22) said.

On Wednesday, Sept. 29, the Samo girls’ varsity volleyball team played a hard game against Culver City. A notable player from the game was Anna Ross (’22) who had a strong start, and used her height to her advantage. Cat Zolkin (’23), Samo’s libero, also played an extremely strong game while constantly distributing the ball to her teammates. Unfortunately, Samo lost the game, which only worked to inspire the team to work harder to win their next home game.

In a long awaited game, the Samo girls’ varsity volleyball team fought harder than ever to beat Redondo on Oct. 5. Grace Neumann (’23) proved to have one of the strongest arms of the game, setting to her teammates and serving across the court. Not to mention, Neumann was continually diving for the ball which ended up saving Samo many points. Although Samo was left with yet another loss, they clearly demonstrated their determination and perseverance throughout the game.

On Oct. 7, Samo girls’ volleyball wore pink for breast cancer and brought in a huge crowd for their senior night during their game against Peninsula. Out of all games this season, it seems as though Samo played their hardest and most aggressively during this game. Though Samo lost, it’s safe to say that this was their hardest fought game yet.

With great apprehension on Oct. 11, the Samo girls’ volleyball team played their final game against Mira Costa. Though Samo lost their last home game of the season, they fought hard throughout each set and didn’t let their loss bring them down.

Now that the volleyball season has come to an end, underclassmen are working their way up to take the seniors’ positions and hope to make the championship next year. Without a doubt, Samo played extremely hard this season and it is going to be hard to see the seniors go.
