Girls' water polo beats El Dorado, 6-3
On Feb. 20, girls' water polo defeated its first opponents in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs, El Dorado, with a score of 6-3.
Girls' Waterpolo beats Culver City High, 4-3
Girls’ Waterpolo beat Culver City High School 4-3 on Tues., Jan. 12. At the half, Samo was down 1-2 but came out strong, fighting to beat Culver City in those last minutes.
Greenies beat Culver City, 13-3
Boys’ water polo was victorious against its crosstown rival, the Culver City Centaurs, with a score of 13-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
Boys' water polo defeats rival El Segundo on Oct. 17
The Greenies met their match on Wednesday, Oct. 17 when the boys' water polo team played El Segundo High School, its longtime rival and competitor in Ocean League. Though the game ended with an ultimate victory of 14-10, the boys needed to maintain the same momentum that they started the game with in order to ensure a win.
Ban the Bottle holds environmental awareness assembly
In an effort to raise student and faculty awareness about the negative side effects of plastic bottle use, the Ban the Bottle club held an assembly demonstrating the dangers of plastic bottles on Friday, March 23. The assembly was hosted by several club members and engineer-in-training Shohreh Janfaza.
WWII veterans come to Samo
For many high school students, history may seem like nothing but facts from a book that have no connection to their lives. But for Carl Hobkirk’s students, on March 20 and 22, history took on a new dimension when five World War II veterans addressed his classes in the library.
Samo students participate in national orchestra
Samo seniors Mayu Isom and Luke Bencivengo, juniors Jonathan Forsander and Yekun Ding and sophomore Justin Sardo flew to Atlanta, GA the weekend of March 24 to participate in the 2012 National High School Honor Orchestra (NHSHO), joining the top high school musicians in the country.

After months of preparing, Samo’s College Center moved to its new home in B115 and awaits updated technology to help students with their college application process.
Advisers survey students for SPARC
On March 8, Samo advisers released the results of the surveys they distributed to second period classes on Jan. 24. According to I-House Adviser Jessica Garrido, the surveys were part of the recently implemented Support Personal Accountability Report Card (SPARC), which is used by the advisers to gain recognition for Samo’s counseling program.

English department bookends the school year

Author Lisa See visits California Literature classes
One hundred sixty California Literature students sat eagerly in the Humanities Center awaiting the introduction of the esteemed Chinese-American author of “Shanghai Girls,” Lisa See. Salumbides’ classes prevail in Samo’s annual Canned Food Drive
The Samo Holiday Canned Food Drive ended on Nov. 23 with one clear victor: Rose Ann Salumbides, whose combined total made up 585 of the over 600 cans brought in. The food drive was run by the Associated Student Body (ASB), which delivered the cans to the West Side Food Bank.

Greenies find early success
“Last year we had better cohesiveness, but this year we’re having more fun. I think we’re positioning ourselves well for our league drive, which starts in October,” coach Matthew Flanders said. “We could have won those games, but we were having problems with over-aggressive players.”
