March Madness
As the month of March comes to an end, so does the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament, nicknamed March Madness. For teachers at Samo each year, the March Madness competition brings about a string of insulting emails and disappointment after disappointment, as teachers realize how little they know about college basketball.
Girls' softball recovers from a rough offseason
In its preseason, girls’ softball faced its most challenging opponents. Currently, the team’s record is 1-7. Though their preseason has not been ideal, the girls have been playing against division one, two and three teams, while Samo is ranked in division four.
Recruited: A look at Samo athletes' futures
For many Samo athletes to arduous road to becoming skilled athletes are paying off as they begin to receive letters of interest and recruitment.
An inside look at field sports
While track and field is a conglomerated title, the field division is often overlooked.
Boys' tennis hopes to overcome preseason setbacks
Boys’ tennis prepares for their upcoming league season with the hope that they will once again be contenders for the California Interscholastic Federation championship (CIF).
Track excels in the start of league
The month of March marks the beginning of the track season.

Baseball season wrap up
Led by head coach Kurt Schwengel, this year’s varsity baseball team has had a historic year. As of now, the team is undefeated in Ocean League and after batting .381, the team has broken its single season record for batting averages. As a result, Samo is ranked 105th in the state and has already clinched a spot in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs.
Jessica Walker places first in state
The stereotypical wrestler for most people is a burly male in an oversized muscle shirt. Junior Jessica Walker, current first place female wrestler in the state of California, challenges this status quo.

Boys Volleyball Season Wrap Up
After earning third place in league, Samo’s boys’ Volleyball team moved on to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs. However, the team would eventually lose to El Camarillo in the first round of playoffs on Tuesday, May 13.

Boys' Golf wrap up
In golf, consistency is just as crucial as skill. Even the most celebrated golfers in the world understand that if their performance doesn’t remain stable, they’ll suffer on the course. And unfortunately for Samo’s boys’ golf team, a range of inconsistencies kept them from the success they long coveted.
Boys' track looks forward to a good season
With the beginning of track season, runners, jumpers and throwers are getting pumped and coaches are getting ready watch their runners race, leap and throw.
Samo beats Hawthorne by a landslide
Girls' track and field dominated the field in the first League meet of the season on Thursday, March 25 against Hawthorne High School.

Swim Season Wrap Up
Despite losing multiple juniors and seniors from last year, Samo’s boys’ and girls’ swim teams had one of their most successful years in recent memory.
Boys' volleyball loses to El Segundo in three sets
Positive energy from fans flowed through Samo's North Gym on Thursday, March 15 as the boys' volleyball team faced the El Segundo High School Eagles.

Track and Field season wrap up
After a busy preseason and a successful season, Samo’s boys and girls track teams went undefeated in league, earning them the title of Ocean League Champions. With the addition of new coach Krishna Curry and new workouts, this year’s team has set new standards for the future of the program and has added to the reputation of the Samo track program throughout southern California.

Boys' tennis season wrap up
After countless drills, matches and tournaments, boys’ tennis season ended after a 16-2 loss against defending champions, San Marino High School, in a California Interscholastic (CIF) quarterfinal game.
Spring sports take off: Boys' Volleyball
The No. 1 Ocean League-ranked Samo boys’ volleyball team is back in action. They have participated in two tournaments and begin their league games this week.

Lacrosse Season Wrap-up
Beginning as an exciting new experiment for Samo athletics, Lacrosse now ends it’s season as a triumphant success for the sports department. With both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams making slow but sure progress, this year’s lacrosse teams thrived, even though many competing players were new to the game.
Spring sports take off: Golf
On Feb. 27 at the Los Surrenos golf tournament Samo lost by a mere three points to last year’s CIF-winning team, Saugus High, as torrential rains plauged the course.

Softball season wrap up
After achieving the highest batting average of a single season, the Samo softball team has secured a spot in this season’s California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) after a record of 10-0 in Ocean League.
Spring sports take off: Boys' tennis
The varsity boys' tennis team started their 2012 season last week in a home match against Harvard-Westlake High School. The team lost their first match 12-6.
Spring sports take off: Swimming
This season, Samo’s boys’ and girls’ swim teams hope to continue setting personal records, dominating league meets, and bonding as a team.
Sports Parents
Equipped with handcrafted signs and a newly purchased camera, she marches boldly toward the stands. She seats herself precisely in the middle of the first row of stands and narrows her eyes to spot her hero on the team. Instantly overcome with immense pride, she begins to shout vaguely familiar phrases about a sport she knows nothing about. She is the ultimate fan. She is the parent.
Facing the enemy: interschool rivals
Historically, there have been rivalries among sports teams that have brought with them an attitude that can shift the mood of an entire crowd.
Online Disputes
A sports team is like a family. If an athlete got into a fight on the field, the rest of the team would probably jump in to support him or her, sometimes mediating the fight, sometimes furthering it. Similarly, when athletes get into squabbles on the Internet, their teammates often react the same way.
The crowd presence
You can work as hard as you want at your sport; running in exasperation up the Greek theatre, working out in the gym for hours on end or swimming laps until your muscles can no longer move. But when there is no crowd to fill the seats, all the hard work does not seem to pay off.

Color Guard wins regional championship
Samo’s Winter Color Guard Team made Samo history when it took the gold at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California Championships Competition (WGASC) on April 12. Senior captains Rachel Theis (’14) and Liza Mirkin (’14) led the rifle/sabre/flag-tossing team to victory in their final show of the year.
In the ring with David Mijares
The hands of junior David Mijares are registered with the United States of America Boxing Club. If he wanted, he could use them to kill someone.
