WWII veterans come to Samo
For many high school students, history may seem like nothing but facts from a book that have no connection to their lives. But for Carl Hobkirk’s students, on March 20 and 22, history took on a new dimension when five World War II veterans addressed his classes in the library.
Board of Education increases number of available permits
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) Board of Education recently revised the permit policy to increase the number of available permits. Though more permitted students will slightly increase District revenue, it will not cause crowding problems in schools according to Vice President of the board Laurie Lieberman.
Samo students participate in national orchestra
Samo seniors Mayu Isom and Luke Bencivengo, juniors Jonathan Forsander and Yekun Ding and sophomore Justin Sardo flew to Atlanta, GA the weekend of March 24 to participate in the 2012 National High School Honor Orchestra (NHSHO), joining the top high school musicians in the country.

Clubs must change fundraising methods to abide by law
After Samo’s annual audit, the school was forced to rethink the way clubs fundraise. Now, they will not be able to fundraise the way they have in previous years because the way the Associated Student Body (ASB) has been handling money from club fundraisers is inconsistent with laws governing how fundraising money should be handled, according to ASB Financial Assistant Jenny Nicolas.
Admin advocate to offer AP European History

Illuminate errors delay seniors’ midyear grade reports to colleges
Due to incorrect grade calculations, Samo had to postpone sending out senior midyear transcripts to colleges. However, the transcripts were sent out on the Feb. 15 due date, along with a letter explaining the situation.

Inside the June 2 Samo film festival with Nicole Andrews

Despite or perhaps because of the minimal preparation involved, the video has been viewed over 250,000 times on YouTube since it was posted on March 27. Cohen, Pitts and his four backup singers were featured on “Good Morning America” and “Inside Edition,” and appeared on the front page of such websites as CNN, AOL and Yahoo. The video has also been tweeted by several celebrities, including one “tweet” that Pitts believes to be the catalyst to the success of the video by long-standing American Idol host Ryan Seacrest.

In an ultimate three-day tournament to test one's strength, throwing speed and ability to duck and cover, players and fans alike gathered together last week to cheer on their fellow Vikings in the 2nd annual Samohi Viking Dodgeball Tournament.
