Gardening Club
You walk though the concrete walls that envelop high school, rushing from class to class, looking only at your phone or a vocab list for the test you’re about to take. However, if you take the time to look up, you’ll see little pockets of color and life thanks to Samo’s Gardening Club.
Anime Club
For over ten years, Samo’s Anime Club has been one of the strongest, most relaxing clubs on campus. It specializes in everything Anime—from anime related games to watching undiscovered anime clips.
Super Smash Bros Club
If you like killing your friends in a virtual world as a fat short man with a mustache or a laser-toting fox, then you should check out Super Smash Brothers Club. Started by Finn Bordal (’14), Jason Oyakawa (’14) and Daniel Chenevert (’14), the club provides setups of all three of the popular Super Smash Brothers games for students to play.

Player to watch: Jonah Mathews
It was the appearance of the 6’0” freshman with the long arms that helped him earn a spot on the boys’ varsity basketball team. However, it was his smart and fast style of play that helped Jonah Mathews (’16) become a key point guard, shooting guard and leader on the team.

Samo Film Presents: SamoHIGHLIGHTS
When you think of CityTV, you might imagine a continuous live stream of dull city council meetings, interrupted by a few black and white infomercials. Nevertheless, the Samo film department is working to expand the channel’s audience by adding a show of its own, “Samohighlights,” to the Saturday morning routine.
Player to watch: Mackie Kennedy
Samo's girls water polo team had four seconds left on the clock and were down by one in overtime. They had already endured a long game and with so little time left to tie it up the girls looked to their captain, perimeter player Mackie Kennedy ('14). Under the pressure of the team Kennedy made the critical shot and led her team to victory in sudden death.
Girls' soccer overcomes injuries in preparation for its season
With up to eight girls out because of injuries during the pre-season, the Samo girls’ soccer team faces a huge obstacle this year. However, through countless hours of practice, sprints and even sprints, the team is continuing to improve and to both mentally and physically move toward their goal of starting the season strong and keeping a consistent level of play throughout the pre-season, season and all the way to CIF.

Samo girls' soccer suffered a 3-0 loss in their first pre-season game against Mira Costa on Dec. 2.
Player to watch: Omar Sanchez
Known for his optimism on the field, commitment to the game and endless soccer experience, Omar Sanchez (’14) has proved himself a talented and determined soccer player.
Player to watch: Imanni Maxwell
The roaring crowds, buzzers, whistles and swishes drive basketball players. Starting her journey at just the age of six, captain of the girls’ varsity basketball team Imanni Maxwell (’15) is continuing to make achievements in her passion.
Wrestling members fight for varsity spots at Valhalla Madness
Samo’s wrestling varsity members were chosen during the first publicized Inter-squad Wrestling Championships, or Valhalla Madness, on Nov. 15.
New opera arrives via wireless headphones
Usually when you’re going to see a show, you buy a ticket, find your seat, sit down and wait for the performance to begin. However, this isn’t the case with the opera “Invisible Cities,” which is directed by Yuval Sharon and is being performed by his production company, The Industry.
Greenies beat Culver City, 13-3
Boys’ water polo was victorious against its crosstown rival, the Culver City Centaurs, with a score of 13-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
I-House Halloween Festival raises student spirit
The I-House Halloween Fest offered food and candy on Oct. 29 in an effort to celebrate Halloween and raise morale among I-House students, according to I-House Principal Florence Culpepper.
A Day in the Life of a Cadet
Most Samo students would cringe at the thought of having to wake up everyday at 6:00 a.m., turning the lights out at 10:00 p.m. and having less than two hours of free time, yet one Viking not only experienced this but learned from it. As a junior, Samuel Clark (’14) spent a year at the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, California, an experience not many can relate to.
Samo Loses to Mater Dei 37-0
On Friday, Sept. 20, Samo football lost its first home game against Mater Dei with a score of 34 - 0.

Imagine coming in first place in a race with over 300 kids from different schools, knowing that you could outrun any one of them. For many this is a fantasy, an impossible superpower, but for Lucas Jackson (’16), it is a reality.
Samo students start organization to purify water in Madagascar
Kian Zohoury ('15), Nikan Namiri ('15) and Joseph Staraci ('15) are fundraising money for H2OPERATION, a cause that aims to purify water in Madagascar, as part of their newly founded club, the CareDrop charity.
Up-and-Humming: Samo’s A Cappella group
Imagine a dozen girls crowded in a choir room, tapping their fingers on a single piano, their voices filling the air as they harmonize “Row Your Boat.” This was the aspiring group of singers only a few weeks ago as they prepared to audition for Valhalla, Samo’s only girls’ a cappella group on campus.
New Calculus DE teacher
For the first time since Calculus DE has been offered at Samo, an in-person teacher, Kelly Okla, is teaching the advanced math class.

The game of golf is a patient, strategic and mental challenge. Sometimes, someone can pick up a golf club and fall in love. Angelina Hwang (’14) did just that and is a top member of the girls’ golf team as a result.
New library branch opens on Pico Boulevard
A new branch of the Santa Monica Public Library is being built on Pico Boulevard to bring together nearby neighborhoods through sustainability and design, according to architects at Koning Eisenburg Architecture (KEA).
