Baseball season wrap up
Led by head coach Kurt Schwengel, this year’s varsity baseball team has had a historic year. As of now, the team is undefeated in Ocean League and after batting .381, the team has broken its single season record for batting averages. As a result, Samo is ranked 105th in the state and has already clinched a spot in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs.

Boys Volleyball Season Wrap Up
After earning third place in league, Samo’s boys’ Volleyball team moved on to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs. However, the team would eventually lose to El Camarillo in the first round of playoffs on Tuesday, May 13.

Boys' Golf wrap up
In golf, consistency is just as crucial as skill. Even the most celebrated golfers in the world understand that if their performance doesn’t remain stable, they’ll suffer on the course. And unfortunately for Samo’s boys’ golf team, a range of inconsistencies kept them from the success they long coveted.

Swim Season Wrap Up
Despite losing multiple juniors and seniors from last year, Samo’s boys’ and girls’ swim teams had one of their most successful years in recent memory.

Track and Field season wrap up
After a busy preseason and a successful season, Samo’s boys and girls track teams went undefeated in league, earning them the title of Ocean League Champions. With the addition of new coach Krishna Curry and new workouts, this year’s team has set new standards for the future of the program and has added to the reputation of the Samo track program throughout southern California.

Boys' tennis season wrap up
After countless drills, matches and tournaments, boys’ tennis season ended after a 16-2 loss against defending champions, San Marino High School, in a California Interscholastic (CIF) quarterfinal game.

Lacrosse Season Wrap-up
Beginning as an exciting new experiment for Samo athletics, Lacrosse now ends it’s season as a triumphant success for the sports department. With both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams making slow but sure progress, this year’s lacrosse teams thrived, even though many competing players were new to the game.

Softball season wrap up
After achieving the highest batting average of a single season, the Samo softball team has secured a spot in this season’s California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) after a record of 10-0 in Ocean League.





Color Guard wins regional championship
Samo’s Winter Color Guard Team made Samo history when it took the gold at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California Championships Competition (WGASC) on April 12. Senior captains Rachel Theis (’14) and Liza Mirkin (’14) led the rifle/sabre/flag-tossing team to victory in their final show of the year.











The North Gym updates CIF banners
As the two new basketball and wrestling California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) banners are placed in the North Gym, remnants of glory and history are brought back. A variety of different sports, names and years lay upon a wall and all hold their own history and accomplishments, while symbolizing one thing: Samo.



Girls' water polo beats El Dorado, 6-3
On Feb. 20, girls' water polo defeated its first opponents in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs, El Dorado, with a score of 6-3.


Boys' soccer beats South Torrance, 2-1
Samo boys' soccer solidified its position in the second round of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) with a hard fought win against South Torrance on Thursday, February 20. The final score was 2-1.









Girls' Waterpolo beats Culver City High, 4-3
Girls’ Waterpolo beat Culver City High School 4-3 on Tues., Jan. 12. At the half, Samo was down 1-2 but came out strong, fighting to beat Culver City in those last minutes.











Boys' Basketball loses to Beverly Hills High School, 58-45
On senior night Feb. 7, the Samo Vikings took on the Beverly Normans, and conceded in a loss of 58-45 as their past four game winning streak came to an end.


When coaches go too far
Last March, Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice was fired for physically and mentally abusing his players during practice. He yelled obscenities, kicked players, threw basketballs and constantly belittled his team. After getting caught on tape abusing his team and using homophobic slurs, Rice was only suspended for three games. Immediately after the suspension, Rice was eventually fired and sued by former players.

























Player to watch: Jonah Mathews
It was the appearance of the 6’0” freshman with the long arms that helped him earn a spot on the boys’ varsity basketball team. However, it was his smart and fast style of play that helped Jonah Mathews (’16) become a key point guard, shooting guard and leader on the team.

Player to watch: Mackie Kennedy
Samo's girls water polo team had four seconds left on the clock and were down by one in overtime. They had already endured a long game and with so little time left to tie it up the girls looked to their captain, perimeter player Mackie Kennedy ('14). Under the pressure of the team Kennedy made the critical shot and led her team to victory in sudden death.


Girls' soccer overcomes injuries in preparation for its season
With up to eight girls out because of injuries during the pre-season, the Samo girls’ soccer team faces a huge obstacle this year. However, through countless hours of practice, sprints and even sprints, the team is continuing to improve and to both mentally and physically move toward their goal of starting the season strong and keeping a consistent level of play throughout the pre-season, season and all the way to CIF.

Girls' soccer loses 3-0 against Mira Costa High School
Samo girls' soccer suffered a 3-0 loss in their first pre-season game against Mira Costa on Dec. 2.

Player to watch: Omar Sanchez
Known for his optimism on the field, commitment to the game and endless soccer experience, Omar Sanchez (’14) has proved himself a talented and determined soccer player.

Player to watch: Imanni Maxwell
The roaring crowds, buzzers, whistles and swishes drive basketball players. Starting her journey at just the age of six, captain of the girls’ varsity basketball team Imanni Maxwell (’15) is continuing to make achievements in her passion.



Wrestling members fight for varsity spots at Valhalla Madness
Samo’s wrestling varsity members were chosen during the first publicized Inter-squad Wrestling Championships, or Valhalla Madness, on Nov. 15.









Greenies beat Culver City, 13-3
Boys’ water polo was victorious against its crosstown rival, the Culver City Centaurs, with a score of 13-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 30.


I-House Halloween Festival raises student spirit
The I-House Halloween Fest offered food and candy on Oct. 29 in an effort to celebrate Halloween and raise morale among I-House students, according to I-House Principal Florence Culpepper.









Samo Loses to Mater Dei 37-0
On Friday, Sept. 20, Samo football lost its first home game against Mater Dei with a score of 34 - 0.
